Self Employment tax and estimated tax payments sound like a big burden, and for some it can result in greater tax liability than if you worked as an employee.  Independent contractors may be able to reduce their tax burden by claiming various deductions such as home office expenses, business-related travel, and equipment costs. Many, self-employed individuals find they have a lower tax burden than if they had worked as an employee.  However, each taxpayer's situation is different, and you should consult with a tax professional to evaluate what decision is best for you.

Additional Considerations:

Beyond the tax rates, employees often enjoy benefits such as health insurance, unemployment benefits, retirement plans, and paid time off.  These can all help mitigate certain expenses and contribute to overall financial stability. Independent contractors, however, must account for these costs on their own, which could potentially impact their net earnings.  Keep in mind that independent contractors are not generally eligible to receive unemployment benefits.
