Inclement Weather Policy - Nanny Employers Plan Ahead!

Winter weather is on its way and that means that nanny employers need to plan ahead and have an inclement weather policy in place. Traveling to work in snowy or icy conditions can be unsafe and safety should be a priority for both parties. In the event of a weather emergency, an inclement weather policy should be outlined and understood at the beginning of employment. Here are some tips on how to prepare for situations that may come up unexpectedly.

Tip #1: Plan ahead & create a policy in a written work agreement.

Planning ahead can save you significant time, money, and headaches! To do this, sit down and create a written agreement that will be signed by your caregiver. In addition to regular and overtime rates of pay, household employers should include detailed policies on sick days, vacation, as well as what is done in the event of weather changes that make it unsafe to travel to work. Tip #2: Define potential situations in the work agreement.

You can’t plan for everything, but you should include as much information as you can in the work agreement. For example, what happens if the weather turns nasty while the nanny is at your home babysitting and cannot safely make it back home? Do you allow her to spend the night at your home, or do you outline that you will help assist her home? Or, what if parents cannot get home in time because of poor road conditions? Have clear policies outlined for a variety of situations so there is no confusion for either party.

When everyone is clear on a nanny’s responsibilities and privileges, it will make disputes easier to solve if and when they happen. If you have a work agreement that is too informal, it could end up hurting you in the long run. So, take your time writing your homecare agreement. Be detailed and ready to implement it when you hire your nanny. If you are organized and clearly outline your expectations and policies, it will leave no room for confusion.
