In addition to regular and overtime rates of pay, household employers should include detailed policies on sick days, vacation, as well as what is done in the event of weather changes that make it unsafe to travel to work. You can’t plan for everything, but you should include as much information as you can in the work agreement. For example, what happens if the weather turns nasty while the nanny is at your home babysitting and cannot safely make it back home? Do you allow her to spend the night at your home, or do you outline that you will help assist her home? Or, what if parents cannot get home in time because of poor road conditions? Have clear policies outlined for a variety of situations so there is no confusion for either party.
When everyone is clear on a nanny’s responsibilities and privileges, it will make disputes easier to solve if and when they happen.
