It is time to plan ahead and have an inclement weather policy in place for the upcoming winter weather. Snowy or icy conditions can be unsafe, and safety should always be the top priority when determining if an employee should commute in to work. In the event of a weather emergency, having an inclement weather policy in place ensures everyone knows what to do.
Planning ahead can save you confusion, stress, and ensure you don’t damage your relationship with your employee! Sit down and create a written agreement that addresses all aspects of the employment relationship. It should include regular and overtime rates of pay, policies on sick leave, vacation, as well as what is done in the event of weather which makes it unsafe to travel to work. Need help? You can’t plan for everything, but you can put parameters, or sample situations in your work agreement. For example, what happens if the weather turns while your caregiver is at your home and cannot safely make it back home? Do you allow them to spend the night at your home, are there other options you can assist with to ensure they get home safely? What if you cannot get home to relieve your nanny in time because of poor road conditions? How will the employee be compensated for the unplanned work hours? Have policies outlined for a variety of situations so there is no confusion for either party.
Weather emergencies can be stressful, and when emotions are running high the chance of a misunderstanding also increases. If you have a work agreement that is informal or unwritten, it could end up hurting your employment relationship in the long run. Take your time, and make sure the agreement is fair for both parties. If you are organized and clearly outline your expectations and policies, it will leave no room for confusion.
